Remodelling my own Engagement Ring

A practical engagement ring design remodelled from a family heirloom inspired by a sense of place and sacred numerology.

In 2016 we visited the Isle of Skye for the first time. With our enthusiasm to explore as much of the island as possible, we missed one of Scotland’s top 10 views over Skye’s Cuillins just around the corner from our cottage in Elgol. In autumn 2022 sitting on the rocks at Elgol, Callum proposed to me with his late gran’s engagement ring.

To make the ring fit, I had to remodel the design. It was important to me to show reverence for the original classic solitaire design but to make it practical to wear everyday as a maker. The heirloom diamond is set almost flush giving it more protection when I am working with tools. A chunkier band allowed me to forge an organic texture on the the ring with a rock from Elgol Beach, connecting the design back to this special location.

The inside of the band is carved with my signature markings to represent our anniversary of the 11th of November; Callum carved 11 and I carved 11. The total number markings symbolise the year we got engaged; 2022. We made the ring on the 11th November 2022 on our 11th anniversary.
